Allied Waste Sells Assets to Waste Management
Several days after receiving approval from the Justice Department, Allied Waste Industries Inc., the second-largest U.S. trash hauler, sold assets in three states to bigger rival Waste Management Inc.The properties included hauling operations in South Carolina, Georgia and Colorado, Waste Management said in a statement.
Waste Management plans divest certain waste hauling assets in these three states and New Jersey as part of an agreement with Justice.

Tropical Storm Bill Hammers Gulf Coast
More than 100,000 southeast Louisiana homes and businesses were expected to be without power well into Tuesday as Tropical Storm Bill made its way onshore, the Associated Press reported.Bill had sustained wind of about 60 mph and spread rain across southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, the Florida Panhandle and Alabama. Heavier wind and rain was expected in Alabama on Tuesday, AP said.
Up to a foot of rain fell in areas already saturated from previous storms and vehicles were stalling as motorists tried to navigate flooded streets.
Louisiana Gov. Mike Foster declared a statewide emergency, while in neighboring Mississippi, Gov. Ronnie Musgrove declared an emergency in three southern counties. Transport Topics
Crude Oil Falls as Storm Fears Ease
The price of crude oil declined in London and New York on Tuesday as fears over Tropical Storm Bill and a strike by workers in Nigeria eased, Bloomberg reported.In New York Mercantile Exchange electronic trading, August crude oil was down 32 cents at $29.87 a barrel, while Brent crude for August settlement fell as much as 45 cents on London's International Petroleum Exchange to $27.88, Bloomberg said.
The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the largest U.S. oil-importing terminal, stopped operations at 11 p.m. local time Sunday because of the storm, but was hopeful it would reopen shortly.
Bloomberg also noted that Royal Dutch/Shell Group said that a general strike in Nigeria that started Monday has not yet affected oil output. Transport Topics
OrderPro Launches Freight Brokerage
OrderPro Logistics, Tucson, Ariz., said June 25 that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had granted a freight brokerage license to its Freight Management Services subsidiary.Chief Executive Officer Richard Windorski said FMS as a stand-alone freight brokerage would bring “immediate and additional revenue” with more shipments for the parent’s motor carrier operations. FMS plans to match shippers’ loads to available carriers through OrderPro’s interactive Web-based system, he said.
OrderPro said it has already been “lining up potential shippers and carriers,” and that “expected revenues from Freight Management Services, after one year of operations, are projected to be in the $3 million range.” Transport Topics
