Manufacturing in Midwest Expands in January

Factory activity in the Midwest expanded in January for a ninth straight month, according to a report released Friday.

Manufacturing is one of trucking's largest and most important customers.

The production index rose to 76.5 while new orders came in at 69.7. However, the employment index slipped to 48.3 from 49.6 in December and continues to suggest a reluctance among employers to take on new staff, Reuters said. Transport Topics
