New Mexico Grants Extension for ’06 Weight Permits

ew Mexico has granted an extension until Feb. 28 before it begins to enforce the state's Weight Distance Tax Permit display requirement.

The state requires trucks operating in that state to carry the permit, which shows that the vehicle operator has registered with the state to pay the tax.

These permits are reissued annually. This year, the state mailed the permits too late in the year to avoid the Christmas rush at the post office, and many carriers did not receive the 2006 credentials in time to get them out to their trucks, American Trucking Associations said.

Recognizing this, the permit display requirement has been extended, though carriers must continue to carry their 2005 permit, ATA said.
