he worst flooding in New England in 70 years has shut down many roads and bridges, including parts of Interstate 95 and Route 1 near Boston, news services reported.

More than a foot of rain fell in some areas of northeastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine over the weekend, and rain continued to fall into Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

In Massachusetts, I-95 is closed in from Route 128 to the New Hampshire state line due to flooding of Route 97 in Topsfield, Mass., state advisories said, the Boston Globe reported on its Web site.

U.S. Route 1 north of Boston was expected to remain closed Tuesday morning, state police said. Large portions of that key artery between Route 16 in Revere, Mass., and Route 128 in Lynnfield, Mass., are under water, forcing the shutdown of dozens of businesses, AP reported.

In New Hampshire, more than 600 roads have been damaged or flooded, while in Maine, flooding washed out dozens of roads and bridges, and threatened a pair of dams along the swollen Salmon Falls River in Lebanon, AP reported.
