Navistar International Corp. said its United Auto Workers union members are reporting to work while the truck maker and the union negotiated a new contract to replace the old agreement that expired Monday, Bloomberg reported.

The two sides were negotiating Monday, spokesman Roy Wiley told Bloomberg. The UAW represents 3,700 workers at nine U.S. Navistar plants.

Navistar, the parent company International Truck and Engine Corp., is trying to avoid disruption from a labor dispute as it pushes for cost reductions, Bloomberg said.

Navistar last week shifted production from its Springfield, Ohio, plant to nonunion factories in Texas and Mexico until a new contract is ratified, Bloomberg reported.

The company’s other facilities are in Indianapolis, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Melrose Park, Ill.

A UAW spokesman told Bloomberg the union wanted to keep talking and that UAW members in previous contracts “have gone the extra mile . . . to help this company be competitive,” Bloomberg reported.
