Nafta Surface Trade Rises to Highest Level Ever

urface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose to the highest monthly level on record in March, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

March trade among the three North American Free Trade Agreement partners jumped 14.8% from a year earlier, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

urface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among Nafta partners moves by land.



March U.S. imports by truck rose 12.7% from a year earlier to $24.6 billion, while truck exports gained 16.2% to $23.6 billion.

Rail imports rose 14% to $8.1 billion year-over-year, while exports gained 10.8% to $3.6 billion.

Pipeline imports jumped 23.3% to $4.4 billion while exports rose 2.6% to $368 million, BTS said.
