Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico was 5.3% higher in April than a year earlier, the biggest year-to-year increase since August 2006, the Department of Transportation said.

Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners reached $65 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report.

U.S. imports by truck rose 6.3% from a year earlier to $23.5 billion, while truck exports gained 4.4% to $21.8 billion.

Rail imports rose 1.1% to $7.6 billion year-over-year, while exports jumped 16% to $3.8 billion.

Pipeline imports rose 4.5% $4.4 billion, while exports rose 118.9% to $410 million, DOT said.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
