Missouri lawmakers have approved a measure that would let the voters decide whether to raise the state’s sales tax to 5 cents for 10 years to generate funding for transportation.

The measure, which would raise the existing 4.25-cent sales tax, will be on the November ballot.

The final vote to put the proposed increase before the voters was cast May 14, winning approval in the House on a 105-43 vote.

“It means that the next campaign starts with getting support and funding to get this over the finish line with the voters in November,” Rep. Dave Hinson, the bill’s main sponsor, told Transport Topics after the vote.

Hinson said that, if approved, the added tax would generate $5.4 billion over 10 years for transportation projects.

The ballot measure passed with the active support of the Missouri Trucking Association and other business groups.
