ALT LAKE CITY — Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta visited shippers in four states on a pair of day trips this month aimed at highlighting the effect of congestion on U.S. business and advocating the Department of Transportation’s plan to ease the nation’s jammed transportation network.

DOT’s plan includes identifying a few projects that have the greatest potential for relieving clogged traffic, encouraging cities to use variable toll projects to spread traffic throughout the day and alleviating congestion at key entry points to the country, he said.

“Today, our economy is expanding and our workforce is growing, but many businesses are worried about the bottom line when goods are stalled at overwhelmed seaports, airplanes are loaded with freight circling around airports and delivery trucks are struck in traffic,” Mineta said in a speech at an Overstock.com distribution center here May 19.
