Mexican Border Opening Up to Year Away, U.S. Says

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration does not plan to open the United States to Mexican trucks carrying international freight for at least eight months, Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta said last week.

“It would take about eight months to a year” to field an adequate number of safety inspectors and make all the other arrangements needed to launch international trucking between the U.S. and Mexico, Mineta told Transport Topics.

He made these comments following a reception held in his honor March 13 by several Asian-American groups.

Mineta said he plans to meet with Mexican government officials March 22 to discuss mutual trucking agreements between the U.S. and Mexico called for in the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement.
