or several years, many medium-duty truck buyers have been fortunate enough to avoid, if not ignore, the turmoil that has roiled the heavy-duty diesel engine and truck business since 1998 as it rushed to meet lower diesel-emission standards on Oct. 1, 2002.

Time’s up.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2004, all medium-duty diesel engines built for use in the United States must meet new, lower emission standards for nitrogen oxides and nonmethane hydrocarbons. They are the same standards, which were set by the Environmental Protection Agency, that heavy-duty diesels must meet now.



The good news is that engine manufacturers said they will have compliant medium engines, although not all models are likely to be available on the first day of 2004.
