Mack Introduces Product Options That Adjust Driveline Configuration to Boost Fuel Economy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Mack Trucks introduced two new options for its Pinnacle highway model that monitor trailer weight and automatically adjust the truck’s driveline configuration to boost fuel economy.

Mack’s new Load Logic system enables the company’s proprietary mDrive automated manual transmission to switch between direct and overdrive performance depending on payload.

The truck maker also announced its 6x2 liftable pusher axle, which lifts or lowers based on whether or not the trailer is loaded.

These two new product options are designed for applications where trucks typically haul heavy and return empty, such as bulk and liquid haul.

“Mack Load Logic and the 6x2 with liftable pusher axle are great examples of Mack’s focus on application excellence,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North America.

Both systems use sensors in the rear suspension to monitor payload status.

With Load Logic, Mack’s mDrive operates as a direct-drive transmission when the trailer is fully loaded but switches to overdrive when it detects an empty trailer, enabling lower engine speed and higher fuel efficiency.

Mack said Load Logic can boost fuel economy by up to 2% in combination with the company’s Super Econodyne system.

Similarly, the new 6x2 axle lifts when the trailer is empty, enabling the vehicle to operate with a 4x2 configuration to reduce drag and tire wear while enhancing fuel efficiency. Under a full load, the axle lowers to provide extra stability.
