Mack Trucks said Tuesday will boost employment by 125 workers at its Macungie, Pa., truck assembly plant, starting in October.

In addition to recalling laid-off workers, Mack anticipates it will hire new employees, although it is “too soon to say exactly how many,” it said in an e-mailed statement

Mack is the sister company of Volvo Trucks North America, which said last week it would recall 270 workers to its truck-building plant in Dublin, Va. (Click here for previous story.)

Both moves are to support increased production of Class 8 trucks, according to the two companies, units of Sweden’s Volvo AB.

“While the construction market remains very weak, we’ve recently experienced an uptick in order activity on the highway and refuse sides of our business,” Mack’s statement said.

“Beyond the economic and market forces at work, we’re also getting a very positive reaction to our new EPA 2010-compliant trucks . . . [that] are also offering our customers better fuel economy than pre-2010 models,” Mack said.
