he national average price for regular unleaded gasoline fell nearly 6.5 cents to $2.01 per gallon over the past three weeks, according to the Lundberg survey of stations nationwide.

This was the first time since December the survey reported a fall in gasoline prices, which are still up 50 cents compared with a year earlier. The price has increased 59 cents since mid-December, Lundberg said.

The trucking industry burns about 269 million gallon of gasoline each week.

The survey said the drop in gas prices was caused by a decline in crude oil prices and the completion of summer maintenance by oil refiners.

The national weighted average price of a gallon of gasoline at self-serve pumps on Friday, including taxes, was $2.11 for midgrade and $2.20 for premium.

Retail gasoline was highest in the San Francisco Bay Area, at $2.32 a gallon, and lowest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at $1.75, Lundberg said.
