The New Jersey Senate must also give its approval. An identical bill, sponsored by Sen. William E. Schluter, cleared the Senate Transportation Committee Dec. 7.

The ban prohibits 102-inch-wide trucks not making a pickup or delivery from using secondary roads in New Jersey, many of which were popular trucker shortcuts or bypasses around toll roads. The state has 545 miles of highway designated for interstate truck traffic.
