NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Kalmar Ottawa has begun selling its new OT2 EV electric-powered terminal tractor with initial deliveries set to begin in the second quarter.
The manufacturer officially opened its order book for the zero-emission yard truck at American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition.
The OT2 EV, which is Kalmar Ottawa’s third-generation electric terminal tractor, is available in four different models — two designed for container ports and terminals with higher lifting capacities, and two for distribution applications, including an on-road version.

With an electric terminal tractor, "you don't have to worry about running out of charge 40 miles away from your charging place," says Kalmar Product Manager Ryan Sipple. (John Sommers II for Transport Topics)
The company is manufacturing the vehicles at its plant in Ottawa, Kan.
Ryan Sipple, product manager at Kalmar Ottawa, said yard operations are an ideal fit for electrification.

“It’s a great advantage because terminal tractors stay close to home at all times,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about running out of charge 40 miles away from your charging place.”
In addition, drivers can take advantage of “opportunity charging” by plugging in the vehicle while taking their breaks, he added.
“You’re getting the same duty cycles as diesel,” Sipple said. “There’s a little more upfront cost you have to deal with, but the total cost of ownership over five to seven years really balances out.”

In addition to producing zero tailpipe emissions, the OT2 EV produces less noise and vibration than traditional diesel yard tractors, which creates a healthier working environment for drivers.
The terminal tractor is available with three different lithium-ion battery capacities. The manufacturer said it can consult with customers to help them determine the appropriate battery capacity and charging options for their operations.
Kalmar Ottawa’s battery monitoring system monitors the voltage, temperature, coolant and current flow of the battery packs to optimize efficiency.
The vehicle has been tested in extreme heat and cold conditions to validate its reliability in real-world freight operations, the company said.
Kalmar Ottawa said its North American dealer network underwent specialized training and obtained certification to support the OT2 EV.
