LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Ivan Vasovic, a truck driver for Hub Group Inc., received the Goodyear Highway Hero award at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

Vasovic, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., received a $5,000 first-place prize for aiding another trucker whose double tanker hit a wall before slamming into a guardrail, spilling a load of diesel that caught fire. Vasovic dragged the driver, who also was on fire, to safety despite intense heat.

“Each Highway Hero award finalist is a true credit to the trucking industry,” said Gary Medalis, marketing director for Goodyear Commercial Tire. “We are honored that these individuals are part of our Highway Hero program, and we look forward to recognizing them for their bravery during MATS.”

Three other finalists for the 31st award were honored here March 27.

Finalist Brian Dunn from Knoxville, Tenn. saw a car crash and ran to the vehicle just as it caught fire. He saw a 2-year old inside, who he rescued while also extinguishing the fire.

Tim Horton, of Sheridan, Ark., braved a 35-foot ravine to help an injured driver, cutting him loose from his seat belt and helping to treat him.

Scott Rosenberg of Isanti, Minn., used a boom crane on his truck to right an overturned pickup truck after a wreck so that the trapped driver and passengers could be extricated.
