International Presses EPA On Lower Sulfur Diesel

International Truck and Engine Corp. took action April 7 that would allow the company to sue the Environmental Protection Agency if it does not adopt a new sulfur standard for diesel fuel.

The Chicago-based manufacturer produces, among other things, diesel engines for Ford Motor Co. Its engineers argue that these engines operate more efficiently on low-sulfur diesel fuel, said company attorney Robert Sussman of Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C.

Without a new fuel standard in place, International, formerly Navistar International, would be confronted with emission standards that new diesel engines alone could not meet, said Sussman.

Engine makers are among those leading the call for government regulations mandating ultra-low sulfur ceilings for diesel fuel. Because the EPA is also pressuring them to build cleaner-running engines, the manufacturers want low-sulfur diesel proclaimed the standard of the land.
