Independent Truckers in California Return to Work
oth truckers and officials with the Port of Oakland said they expected the strike by independent truckers to end on Monday after the sides reached a deal over the weekend, news services reported.
Irvinder Dhanda, a spokesman for the independent truckers, told KCBS-TV in California that trucking companies agreed to raise the rates they pay to cover fuel costs.
Harold Jones, spokesman for the Port of Oakland, did not discuss details, but told the television station agreements between truckers and companies were reached.
Independent truckers in Virginia also protested late last week at the Hampton Roads port, one of the busiest cargo ports on the East Coast, but it appeared the protests would not extend into this week, news services said.
Independent truckers handle about 80% of the cargo at the Hampton Roads port, which has terminals at Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News.
