Import Growth Spurs L.A. Port Traffic

The Port of Los Angeles posted a 16.3% increase in container volume in November over the same month in 1998, handling 347,816 units of 20-foot-long cargo containers, port officials said.

The November total marked the port’s seventh consecutive month of 300,000 or more container movements.

Port officials said the latest volume represents the third-highest one-month total for this year. They called that uncommon because container traffic usually falls in the final two months of year, noting the traditional holiday shipping season occurs in October.

Executive Director Larry A. Keller attributed the increase to a surge in foreign imports and a steady recovery in U.S. exports this year.
