Immigration Rallies Slow Trucking, Port Operations

undreds of thousands of immigrants and their supporters rallied around the country Monday, slowing or stopping work at some key trade ports, news services reported.

At the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles — the nation’s largest port complex — up to 90% of truck drivers were off the job, leaving the bustling port quiet, the Associated Press reported.

One local operator said 100 trucks normally line up outside one terminal; on Monday, he said, just three or four arrived, AP reported.



Secaucus, N.J.-based Goya Foods, the nation's largest Hispanic-owned food chain, suspended deliveries everywhere except Florida, keeping 300 trucks off the road and leaving more than 5 million products in warehouses an extra day, AP said.

he construction industry was hard hit in Florida, with more than half the workers at construction sites in Miami-Dade County failing to show up for work, AP reported.

The rallies were to support immigration rights and amnesty for illegal aliens, many of whom are from Latin America.
