I-5 Partially Reopened Near L.A. After Big Weekend Accident

California officials reopened southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Los Angeles early Monday after a 31-vehicle pileup over the weekend killed three and closed a freeway tunnel, USA Today reported.

The truck tunnel that was the scene a big crash Friday remained closed, the paper reported on its Web site. The accident Friday shut down I-5 in both directions at the crash site north of Los Angeles.

A California Highway Patrol official told the paper that all the main lanes on the southbound side of the freeway were open and workers would soon begin working to open the northbound lanes on I-5.

He said congestion in the area was heavy and that drivers could expect a slow commute Monday, USA Today reported.

A chain-reaction collision of trucks triggered a massive fire late Friday in the Newhall Pass tunnel, 30 miles north of Los Angeles, the paper said.

The accident occurred in the southbound truck bypass of the Interstate 5 Golden State Freeway, Caltrans officials said, although the cause of the crash had not been determined, USA Today reported.
