House Panel Schedules Hearing on Safety Grants

The House subcommittee on highways and transit will hold a hearing Jan. 28 to take testimony on “Improving the Effectiveness of the Federal Surface Transportation Safety Grant Programs.”

Among those testifying will be New York State Police Sgt. Thomas Fuller, president of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

CVSA represents the state police agencies that enforce federal truck safety laws. The federal government funds the enforcement work, and CVSA officials have been saying they need more money to keep up with increasingly numerous and complex truck safety rules.

Other witness are: Christopher Hart, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board; Douglas Danko, chairman of the American Traffic Safety Services Association; Kendall Poole, director of the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office, on behalf of the Governors Highway Safety Association; and Peter Sweatman, director of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, on behalf of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America.

Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) is chairman of the subcommittee, which has been holding hearings in advance of Congress’ work on a new transportation reauthorization bill. The current law, the two-year MAP-21, expires Sept. 30.
