AN ANGELO, Texas — The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. unveiled a new line of Class 8 products it says would increase fleet fuel efficiency by up to 8%.

The company said its Fuel Max tire family, which includes steer, drive and trailer tires, will cost about 4% to 5% more than comparably sized conventional tires. Commercial production of the steer tires has already begun, Goodyear said, while the drive tires will begin rolling out of factories in September and the trailer models one month later.

At Goodyear’s press conference at the company’s proving grounds here Aug. 22, Donn Kramer, the company’s commercial tire marketing director, said, “Our goal is to lower the costs of operation for our customers,” noting that record-high fuel prices have pushed fuel efficiency to the top of fleet concerns.
