HICAGO — A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration official said last week the agency planned to have a study of transportation security technologies ready by Oct. 1.

The two-year study, funded jointly by FMCSA and the Federal Highway Administration’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office, is examining how several types of technologies help security, including wireless communications, global log-in by drivers or transportation workers via wireless systems and biometrics, including fingerprint use to identify people, said Joseph DeLorenzo, a hazardous materials specialist with FMCSA’s Midwest Service Center.

He spoke June 9 on security and technology at the IT & Business Process Conference here sponsored by T3 magazine.

“Security plans may include technology, but technology alone is not a security plan,” DeLorenzo said.
