Floods Prompt Warnings, Close Some Roads in Southeast

Extensive flooding in the southeast has caused closure of a number of major roads, news services reported Monday.

Forecasters issued flood alerts for parts of Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia as rain continued to fall for a third day, the Associated Press reported.

As many as 20 inches of rain has fallen in three days in the Atlanta metro area, and at least two drivers were killed when their cars were swept into floodwaters, AP said.

The westbound lanes of Interstate 20 in Douglas County, Ga., were shut down overnight, but had reopened by 4 a.m. Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Numerous major roads were blocked by high water in Paulding County, Ga., including U.S. 278 and Ga. 92 near Hiram, Ga., and more than 60 roads were closed countywide, the paper said.
