Fleets Say Hours Enforcement Varies Widely in First Month

nforcement of new federal driver hours-of-service rules appeared to vary around the country as the first month of a 2-month educational period came to a close, according to carrier and enforcement officials.

Although the rules were unveiled in April, many truck drivers and fleet managers remain intensely curious about the regulations’ fine points of enforcement and besieged the Department of Transportation with thousands of calls since late December.

“Not all states do the same thing. I’m surprised we haven’t gotten more calls,” said Stephen Campbell, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.



“That will happen after the 60 days have gone by,” he said, referring to the Transportation Department’s recommendation for a 60-day enforcement phase-in.
