FHWA Extends Comment Time on Freight Network Proposal

The Federal Highway Administration is extending the deadline for public comments on its draft of a Primary Freight Network to Jan. 17, according to a notice in the Federal Register.

The original deadline was Dec. 19.

FHWA was tasked with designating a 27,000-mile network on existing interstates and roadways in MAP-21, the last two-year federal surface transportation law. The primary network is the first of three elements Congress said to include in the National Freight network. The other two are “critical” rural freight corridors and interstate miles not designated as primary. The purpose is to help states guide where to invest in infrastructure.

A draft of the plan was released in November. FHWA seeks comments on the proposed routes for final initial designation of the network; the appropriate size and criteria for the highway network; and potential uses.
