he Federal Highway Administration authorized the release of $95 million in federal funding for a project that will allow trains to double stack containers in an effort to ease congestion on highways, Norfolk Southern Corp. said Tuesday.

FHWA said the remainder of the project will be funded by the states of Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio along with Norfolk Southern Corp.

The plan, known as the Heartland Corridor project, is intended to reduce the time required to move goods between Virginia ports and Chicago, the Associated Press reported.

The project also provides for the construction of new terminals at Roanoke, Va., Prichard, W.Va., and a military base near Columbus, Ohio, AP reported.

Tim Lynch, senior vice president of American Trucking Associations, told AP that the trucking industry supports the initiative but added that the plan raises concerns regarding the use of federal highway funds for a rail project.
