Feds to Study Antilock Brakes, Underride Guards

How well the antilock brake system technology performs in heavy trucks will be part of a multiyear study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“This is not a regulatory thing,” Charles J. Kahane, chief of the evaluation division of NHTSA, said Aug. 14. “It’s whether or not ABS has been effective in reducing crashes.”

The study will also examine the safety benefits of rear impact guards on truck trailers.

Kahane said the research effort could lead to more regulations, depending on what the results show. But that won’t be determined for several years, he added.
