EPA to Offer Incentives for Engine Retrofits

WASHINGTON — The federal government unveiled a plan to give truck owners an economic incentive to retrofit older diesel engines with equipment that will bring their emissions in line with today’s pollution standards.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced its diesel retrofit program March 22, but agency officials could not say how much money truck owners may be offered to

uy the equipment because details remain to be worked out.

They did say that the cost of retrofitting engines with commercially available emission-control technologies will range from several hundred to several thousand dollars for each vehicle.

The incentives may be left up to state and municipal clean-air officials to work out.
