EPA to Issue Diesel SCR Guidelines; Won’t Confirm Heavy-Duty Inclusion

he Environmental Protection Agency said it would issue guidelines for urea-injection systems on diesel engines as early as next month.

While EPA would not confirm whether heavy-duty truck engines would be included in the guidelines, truck-engine manufacturers said the move would be an important first step in the industry’s development of 2010 model-year power plants.

Urea injection refers to the process also known as selective catalytic reduction. After initially opposing SCR, EPA officials said they would not close the door on the technology, and some engine manufacturers have said they will use SCR to meet EPA’s 2010 emission rule.
