Less-than-truckload carrier A. Duie Pyle continues to expand its core mid-Atlantic and Northeast geographical footprint, announcing plans for a service center in Suffolk, Va.

The terminal will support warehouse operations, LTL cross-dock services and transloading in the Norfolk, Va., area.

Pyle expects the 52-door LTL cross-dock and 200,000 square feet of warehouse facility, which can be expanded to 420,000 square feet, to be operational in the second quarter of 2027, the carrier said Jan. 20.

The facility is intended to offer easier connections to the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Ohio freight corridors from the Port of Virginia.

“Our expansion in the Suffolk–Norfolk market reflects a strategic response to the rapidly evolving demands of today’s supply chain,” said Chief Commercial Officer Frank Granieri.

“In recent years, shippers have navigated unprecedented disruptions, elevating the need for speed, resilience and adaptability across their networks. By establishing this integrated warehouse and LTL service center near the Port of Virginia, we’re not just enhancing our capacity; we’re addressing the pressing need for more efficient, adaptive solutions that streamline operations in a high-demand market,” Granieri said.

“This facility will allow Pyle to offer enhanced services that drive transparency, improve supply chain connectivity and, ultimately, deliver the flexibility and speed that today’s shippers require to remain competitive,” he added.

The 43-acre site is part of the Port 460 Logistics Center under development. Developers Rockefeller Group and Matan Cos. broke ground on Port 460 in September 2024. Completion of the first two buildings — a 339,150-square-foot distribution center and a 246,490-square-foot distribution center — is nearing. The Pyle facility will be building No. 5 of the project’s first phase.

Carriers and logistics providers have been eyeing backup plans for East Coast deliveries since the Francis Scott Key Bridge near Baltimore was struck by a cargo ship in March 2024.

Pyle previously told Transport Topics of plans to build terminals in Fredericksburg, Va., and northeast Maryland in 2026 along with a Norfolk-area facility.

But the Suffolk facility is just one of a number of moves by Pyle to expand its footprint.

In October, Pyle launched a Mexican cross-border service for the first time. Pyle’s new service links cross-dock operations at key inland ports such as Laredo and El Paso, Texas.

Director of Strategic Planning Craig Lough noted on social media that the service integrated three service lines and would provide faster transit times.

In February, Pyle entered the North Carolina market for the first time.

Pyle opened a warehouse and distribution center west of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The 186,000-square-foot facility offers warehousing, pick-and-pack, consolidation, deconsolidation, hazmat storage and bulk storage services. The site also includes parking for up to 75 trailers.

Pyle also announced in February the opening of a fleet maintenance facility in Richmond, Va. The carrier said the 9,700-square-foot facility is designed to support its LTL and dedicated transportation operations with three drive-through work bays, one of which is equipped with a pit, and a fully automatic truck wash.

The Richmond facility is Pyle’s first fully air-conditioned fleet maintenance facility, which the company said at the time would become a standard feature at all Pyle facilities.

Also in the first quarter of 2025, Pyle reopened service centers bought from the estate of bankrupt LTL carrier Yellow Corp. in Camp Hill and Erie, Pa.; Bridgeport, W.Va.; and Rochester, N.Y.

Pyle ranks No. 56 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America and No. 16 in the LTL arena.
