Driver-Fatigue Products Drawing More Interest as Prices Drop

xecutives with companies that manufacture driver-fatigue and other safety technologies said they are seeing growing interest from carriers as prices fall and the economic consequences of accidents become clearer.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has said each fatal truck-involved crash costs companies an average of $3.4 million.

Mike Formica, president of AssistWare Technologies Inc., which sells SafeTrac, a camera-based lane departure warning system, said few carriers were interested in the technology five years ago because many cost thousands of dollars. However, demand has increased as falling prices for digital cameras have allowed AssistWare to make its products more affordable.
