The national average price of diesel fuel rose 7.4 cents to $2.572 a gallon, its sixth straight weekly increase, the Department of Energy said.

The boost left diesel $2.12 below the same week last year when it was rising toward its all-time record of $4.764 a gallon, set last July 14.

Trucking’s main fuel rose 14.6 cents last week, its biggest single-week gain in more than a year.

Diesel has risen 38.7 cents in the past six weeks, and Monday’s increase left the price at its highest level since Dec. 1, according to DOE records.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 4.8 cents to $2.672, its tenth straight gain in which it has risen 63.5 cents. Gas jumped a dime last week.

Monday’s gas price is $1.41 below that of a year ago, when it was increasing toward its $4.114 record set last July 7.

Crude oil pushed past $72 a barrel last week for the first time since November and fell $1.42 Monday to close at $70.42 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg reported.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
