he average national price of retail diesel fuel fell 2.3 cents to $2.476 a gallon, the Energy Department reported Monday.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline dropped 5.8 cents, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Meanwhile, the crude oil prices fell to a six-week low Monday on speculation that heating-fuel supplies are sufficient to meet demand following the weekend’s snowstorm in the Mid-Atlantic Northeast, Bloomberg reported.



Crude oil, heating oil, gasoline, diesel and natural gas stockpiles all exceed the five-year average, according to DOE figures, Bloomberg said.

Crude oil for March delivery fell 59 cents to $61.25 a barrel at the close of trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg reported, though prices are still 30% over a year ago.

The diesel retail price is 49 cents higher than this time last year, which would cost a trucker filling a big rig’s 200-gallon tanks an extra $98.

Gasoline’s price is 38.6 cents higher than this time last year

iesel prices fell in all five major regions, led by a 2.6-cent decline in the Midwest to $2.419 and 2.4-cent dip on the West Coast to $2.621.

California, which DOE breaks out separately from its regions, saw its price fall 3 cents to $2.709.
