Diesel fuel’s national average price jumped 4 cents from last week to $2.964 a gallon, the Energy Department said Monday.

The increase left the price 25.1 cents higher than the same week last year, according to DOE figures.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 3.1 cents to $2.787 a gallon, DOE said, though the price was 29 cents higher than the same week last year.

Gas is now 62.2 cents higher than the year’s low price of $2.165, set on Jan. 29.

Crude oil prices jumped to several all-time record highs last week, closing at more than $80 a barrel on Thursday for the first time ever.

Diesel has gained 10.1 cents in the last three weeks, following a 3.1-cent gain last week and a 3-cent rise two weeks ago.

Trucking’s main fuel has risen in seven of the past 11 weeks, gaining 13.5 cents over that time. Monday’s price is 55.1 cents higher than the year’s low price of $2.413, set on Jan. 29.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
