Diesel Falls Again to Close Year at $3.213

The average price of U.S. retail diesel fell 6.8 cents a gallon for the final week of the year to $3.213, the U.S. Department of Energy said Dec. 29.

Trucking’s main fuel closed 2014 at 80.8 cents below its peak price of $4.021 in March.

DOE’s Energy Information Administration also said gasoline plunged by 10.4 cents a gallon for the week ended Dec. 29 to $2.299.

A year ago, diesel cost 69 cents more a gallon. The last time diesel was cheaper than the current price was Dec. 6, 2010, when it was $3.197.



Crude oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange also continued to drop, closing Dec. 29 at $53.61, the lowest price since May 1, 2009.

The gasoline price was the lowest since it was $2.309 on May 18, 2009.
