Diesel fuel’s national average pump price dropped 5.1 cents off an 11-month high to $2.847 a gallon, the Energy Department reported Monday.

Last week’s $2.898 average was the highest since Sept. 4.

The decline followed last week’s 1.2-cent increase and left trucking’s main fuel 21.8 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 6.7 cents to $2.876 a gallon, continuing a downward trend since late May’s record high of $3.218.

Gas is now 22.9 cents below the same week last year.

The diesel decrease was just the third downturn in the past nine weeks, according to DOE figures. The price was flat three weeks ago at $2.889.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
