new report funded by backers of the proposed Detroit River Tunnel Project showed that an unplanned shutdown of the Ambassador Bridge — the busiest U.S.-Canada crossing — would cost $65 million a day.

“We are just discovering how deep the economic impact is,” said Michael Belzer, the report’s author. About 13,000 trucks every day use the bridge.

Belzer told Transport Topics that the automobile business, which supplies much of the business to truckers along the border, would be particularly hard hit.

As an example of the bridge’s key role, while it did not shut down during the electrical blackout in August, Customs centers along the border were disrupted, causing some delays to truck traffic.
