Truck dealers plan to meet with Obama administration officials Wednesday to push for a 10% tax credit for buyers of new trucks and engines.

The American Truck Dealers said it scheduled the meeting with Treasury Department officials in Washington, at which truck sellers will ask for a “short-term investment tax credit of 10%” toward the purchase of new Class 8 trucks.

ATD sent a letter to President Obama late last month outlining the proposal, which would also seek 12- to 18-month “green vouchers” for purchasers of Class 6-7 trucks, allowing for a $6,000 credit.

In both cases, the credits would be for trucks with 2010 engines that meet stricter federal emissions guidelines.

The letter was co-signed by major heavy-duty truck makers including Volvo Trucks North America, Mack Trucks, Navistar Inc. and Daimler Trucks North America. Groups including the Engine Manufacturers Association, the Truck Manufacturers Association and the Truck Rental and Leasing Association also signed the letter.

ATD Chairman Kyle Treadway, president of Salt Lake City-based Kenworth Truck Sales, confirmed to Transport Topics that the meeting was being set up for Wednesday afternoon.

The letter also thanked President Obama for visiting truck dealerships in the past year, including one in Maryland in June. (Click here for previous coverage.)
