PARIS — DaimlerChrysler has broken off talks with Nissan Motor to acquire a stake in the Japanese company's truck and car manufacturing business.

Three months ago, DaimlerChrysler announced it was negotiating with Nissan to acquire a stake in Nissan Diesel, Japan's third largest truck builder. The talks were later expanded to include a stake in the parent company itself. As the talks ended, both companies agreed they would continue with an earlier agreement to cooperate in commercial vehicles, particularly in the light truck

egment.

"We discussed our options of a potential partnership very openly and in a very friendly atmosphere, but finally decided not to pursue participation, said DaimlerChrysler Chairman Juergen E. Schrempp.

By withdrawing from the talks, DaimlerChrysler has opened the door for Nissan's other suitor, the French car and truck builder Renault. Unlike DaimlerChrysler, which was seeking managment control of Nissan, Renault says it will accept a minority stake.
