Cummins Shows Cylinder Kit, Idling Feature

NEW ORLEANS — Cummins Engine Co. is introducing new cylinder kits with 100,000- and 300,000-mile warranties for its pre-1991 L10 diesel engines. The kits will be available Jan. 1.

The TriTech and TriTech Plus kits use cylinder technology established in Cummins’ larger N14 diesel engine. The company said its “I” rings in both kits offer improved oil control. Both also feature a 15-degree keystone angle on compression rings for better durability and performance.

The TriTech Plus kit offers a 50% increase in life expectancy for an L10 cylinder kit, according to the company. This higher end of the two kits is designed with an anodized bowl that offers greater strength against thermal fatigue, the company said.

The single Ni TriTech kit comes with a one-year, 100,000-mile warranty. The dual Ni TriTech Plus comes with a three-year, 300,000-mile warranty.

Cummins also introduced ICON, an automatic idling system for electronic engines.

Designed for the Interact System, Signature Series and N14Plus engines, ICON monitors several systems and automatically starts or stops the engine based on pre-set parameters. If the oil temperature drops below a set level, ICON signals the engine’s electronic control module to start the engine. Once the oil temperature returns to its level, the ICON signals the ECM to shut the engine down.

ICON also monitors the battery charge. When charge levels drop, the system starts the engine to charge the battery.

A Cab Comfort option works like a household thermostat, starting and stopping the engine according to bunk temperature.

The system is available as a retrofit for Cummins N14Plus or M11 Plus engines. It will be available as a factory-installed option in March 1999.
