he federal government has gained a 30-day extension of the deadline for filing its appeal to the Supreme Court of a lower court decision banning trucks from Mexico until it has done a study of potential environmental effects of increased exhaust emissions, the Department of Justice said July 11.

DOJ spokesman Blaine Rathmeyer told Transport Topics the extension means the government has until early August to appeal a decision by a U.S. appeals court.

The case involves a lawsuit by a coalition of groups objecting to President Bush’s lifting a 22-year-old moratorium on Mexican trucks driving beyond commercial zones along the border without the Department of Transportation first conducting an environmental impact study.
