Cargo container traffic rose at the Port of Hampton Roads, Va., for the third straight month, the Associated Press reported.

The number of 20-foot cargo containers handled by the port rose 22.3% in March, compared with a year ago, according to the Virginia Port Authority, AP reported.

Authority spokesman Joe Harris said the increase was a sign of an improving economy and that the April traffic seemed higher, AP reported.

The Virginia Port Authority has marine terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News and an inland rail and truck terminal in Front Royal, Va.
