Connecticut Adds ‘Truck Escape Ramp’ to Route 44

Connecticut transportation officials announced the completion of a “truck escape ramp” on Route 44.

The escape ramp, which opened Thursday near Avon Mountain, is intended to provide a safe path in case a driver loses control of his vehicle on the road’s steep downgrade, according to a statement from the Connecticut Department of Transportation

The escape ramp includes retaining walls, a concrete barrier curb and, a “vehicle barrier system” that uses a nets and cables attached to “self contained energy absorbing units” that are designed to stop moving vehicles, the state DOT said.
