Conference to Form Intermodal Agenda

The Transportation Research Board will hold a national conference focusing on global intermodal freight movement into the next century.

Participants at the conference, which will take place Feb. 23 to 26 at the Hyatt Regency in Long Beach, Calif., will assess the current state of readiness across three sectors — public, commercial and defense — and will help to establish an action agenda for the industry in the 21st century.

The conference is being held with support from the Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation. Among the features will be an “Intermodal Freight Report Card” to grade the level of progress made since 1994, when the National Commission on Intermodal Transportation submitted a report to Congress with recommendations regarding development of an intermodal transportation system in the United States.

Panel sessions will focus on a range of topics from global freight movement, safety, cargo liability and security to defense, infrastructure capacity, capital development and information technology.
