Colorado lawmakers have passed a bill that allows tax credits of up $20,000 per vehicle for fleets buying new trucks powered by natural gas.

Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) has said he will sign the measure, which the Senate approved April 30 after House passage April 15.

The credits would be $20,000 for heavy-duty trucks, $15,000 for medium-duty and $7,500 for light-duty.

The incentives are intended to help underwrite the cost of the natural-gas trucks, which in the heavy-duty class can cost $50,000 more than a diesel truck.

The bill — which is strongly supported by Colorado truckers — also reduces sales taxes on medium- and heavy-duty natural-gas trucks.
