Cargo Cards Give Freight Flow a Helping Hand at Rotterdam Port

LONDON -- Many port drivers would give their left arms to make it through a congested terminal quickly, but at the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, terminal operators are only asking for their hand.

The Netherlands port is trying to thwart thieves by using a scanner that reads the unique characteristics of drivers’ palms. Used in conjunction with an identifier card and information technology that reduces paperwork and enables better planning, the port is also cutting waiting times by as much as an hour.
