Busy Maryland Rest Area to Close This Weekend

A Maryland rest stop on Interstate 95 north of Baltimore — believed to be the nation’s busiest — will close this weekend for more than a year of renovations, as part of a half-billion dollar public-private partnership, news reports said.

The Maryland House in Harford County, Md., which opened in 1963, will close on Saturday and will remain closed through late next year, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Truck parking in Harford County will be extremely limited with the closure, and truck drivers will need to utilize locations in Cecil County, including the Chesapeake House, the Perryville Weigh Station and privately owned facilities along I-95, WUSA television reported on its website.

The Chesapeake House rest area, farther north on I-95 in Cecil County, will remain open and will begin similar renovations following the Maryland House refurbishment, the Sun reported.

About the 2.8 million travelers annually use Maryland House, which is believed to be the busiest U.S. travel plaza, the Sun said. The smaller Chesapeake House has more than 2 million visitors annually, the paper reported on its website.
